Key Club Awarded Patches For District Honors
A club that not that long ago ranked near the bottom of clubs in the Texas-Oklahoma District, the Terrell High School Key Club has risen to the top, earning recognition at the district level.
Last year, the service club raised the bar and climbed to a rank of no. 22 in the more than 300 clubs in the district. Club members have even bigger goals in mind this year.
At their weekly meeting Thursday, Lt. Governor Chase Beavers — also a member of the THS club — presented local officers with patches for the club’s performance in the governor’s project — Food for Life — and the district project — Shoes on Another Foot.
In the food collection service project, Key Club members collected more than 1,000 canned goods and non-perishable items for the Terrell Share Center.
In their shoe drive, they surpassed their goal of 30 pair, collecting more than double the amount.
The club also received a patch for outstanding on-time reporting.
According to advisor Dennis Hogan, the club secretary is entirely responsible for the reports which include information such as attendance, minutes from meetings and summaries of service projects.
Under the direction of THS faculty advisors Mark Bell and Michelle Doyle, Key Club currently has 35 members, but hopes to recruit new students to join this year with a goal of 50 members. The club is open to any THS student.
Dues are $15 per year.
A division of Kiwanis Club International, the Terrell High School Key Club meets every Tuesday at 4 p.m. in Room 512 of the THS campus.
