He moved to Dallas at the age of 13 and attended Arlington State College after which he became employed with Gould, Inc. in Minnesota. In 1975, he joined Powerlab, Inc. and relocated with his family to Terrell in 1976. In 1982, Don was named president of Powerlab, Inc. where he worked until his retirement. He was Terrell City Councilman in the early 1980’s, Chairman of the Terrell Chamber of Commerce, and served on American National Bank’s Board of Directors as well as serving many years with Terrell State Hospital’s Volunteer Services Council. She went to Heaven Feb. 1, 2005 and now they are reunited again in the Lord's presence. | | Club Meetings
Cancer survivor writes book on benefits of drinking water Henry David Thoreau once wrote, “Water is the only drink for a wise man.” Apparently, it may be the best choice for a healthy one, too. On Tuesday, author and cancer survivor Pam Wenzel visited with Terrell Kiwanis Club, discussing her book, “Spa Water: A Guide to Creating World Class Spa Water at Home.” A 17-year survivor of breast cancer, Wenzel told Kiwanians she was inspired to write the book while vacationing in New Mexico. “I was always concerned that my family didn’t drink enough water. We were staying at the Hyatt Tamaya in Alband they had infused water in dispensers throughout the hotel and spa,” Wenzel recalled. That got me to thinking more people would probably drink water if it tasted like spa water.” Wenzel’s book includes 22 recipes from award-winning hotels and spas around the world. While researching her book, Wenzel discovered correlations between dehydration and health, Find out more about Wenzel and her book at www.myspawaterbook.com. ******************************************** New Member Inductions Cindy Lay, Beverly Hogan, J.C. This year, with economic conditions tougher than in recent memory, the need is anticipated to be especially great. The summer heat may be gone, but the Terrell High School Key Club was host to an "Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation" event to raise funds for cancer research recently at the Terrell Brookshire's parking lot, raising over $300. "I chose Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation as my 2010-2011 governor's project for the Texas-Oklahoma district of Key Club because this project is something we all can relate to," said Chase Beavers, who earlier this year was elected to the governor's position. "I have had numerous members of my family survive cancer through the years, but it has made me very passionate about finding a cure." Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation was started by the efforts of four year old Alexandra Scott, who began selling lemonade in her front yard to raise money for cancer research. "She lost her battle to cancer when she was eight years old, but since that day, her family and organizations across the world have raised millions of dollars," Beavers said. It ties in with my governor duties, because each governor must select one project that they are most passionate about. I'm very passionate about knocking out cancer once and for all." THS Key Club members will be on hand passing out lemonade, taking donations and telling people about Alex's story. "The lemonade is not for sale, but we will be asking for donations," said Kiwanis member Dennis Hogan, sponsor of the THS Key Club. "We invite everyone out to support this great cause." "We just know that this is going to be an outstanding event, and we are ready to have an outstanding stand," Beavers said. "I know with a district of almost 17,000 members that choosing this project will raise the funds to knock cancer out once and for all, 'One cup at a time.'" More information about the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation is available at the organization's website, www.alexslemonade.org. ******************************************** Annual Officers Installation Banquet Congratulations Dennis Hogan Kiwanian of the Year & Kaci Landes Service Above Self Award

In an effort to enhance the awareness of oral hygiene, Kiwanis club of Terrell partners with the office of dentist and Kiwanis member, Gwendolyn Kines who are local host to the nationally sponsored program, “Give Kids a Smile Day,”
The first Friday in February, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Kiwanis member, Dr. Gwendolyn Kines, along with staff, volunteers and fellow Kiwanis member and dentist Alan Nix, provided free dental screenings and sealants for children 1-18 at the Rockwall and Brin Church of Christ gymnasium. Something as easy as getting in and out of your home can be the most difficult when confined to a wheelchair. Early on Saturday morning several members of the Kiwanis Club of Terrell gathered at a home in Terrell. Their mission was to build a wheelchair ramp for someone in order for them to have easy access to their home. The Texas Ramp Project began in Richardson in 1985 and has spread across the state. More than 2000 ramps have been built in the Dallas area. this is the second one The Terrell Kiwanis Club has had the privlege of being involved in. All supplies, tools and some pre-built modules are provided by The Texas Ramp Project and a Project manager was on site.
With the help of a little labor and a little love, by the end of the morning, the difficulty of manuvering in and out of a home became a life-changing experience for all.
